The Amish and Autism

April 23, 2009

We all seem to pay attention to information sources that reinforce our beliefs. Conservatives watch Fox News and Liberals read the New York Times. It is pretty much the same way with the autism and vaccine controversy. I have heard from a couple of people “They did the study—the Amish don’t get autism.” We seem to take this kind of intellectual laziness for granted. It is in our politics, it is in our educational system and our news media are full of it. People who tend to believe in the medical establishment commonly say that there is no proven link to autism and vaccines. They feel as strongly—and with as little proof as the first group.
I looked for the fabled Amish study and could not find it. What I did find was a series of articles by a reporter, Dan Olmsted. Mr. Olmsted reasoned that if vaccines were causing autism, we should be able to look at an unvaccinated population. He wrote a series of articles on autism and the Amish and came to the conclusion that the Amish did indeed vaccinate, but they did less vaccination than the general population and have less autism—at least according to Mr. Olmstead.
One article he wrote was about children being cared for by Homefirst Health Services in Chicago. Many of the families using the clinic home school and tend not to vaccinate. To quote Dr. Mayer Eisenstein, “We have a fairly large practice. We have about 30,000 or 35,000 children that we’ve taken care of over the years, and I don’t think we have a single case of autism in children delivered by us who never received vaccines.” Dr. Eisenstein makes the point that these observations do not rise to the level of an actual study, even speculating the families with autistic children may have moved or stopped going to the clinic. It is unlikely, but possible.
Of course Dan Olmstead has been criticized for his work. Articles have been written stating the he did not look very hard when looking for autism among the Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. “The idea that the Amish do not vaccinate their children is untrue,” says Dr. Kevin Strauss, MD, a pediatrician at the CSC. “We run a weekly vaccination clinic and it’s very busy.” Dr. Strauss also notes that the Amish don’t vaccinate as much as the general population. He also says, “Autism isn’t a diagnosis – it’s a description of behavior. We see autistic behaviors along with seizure disorders or mental retardation or a genetic disorder, where the autism is part of a more complicated clinical spectrum.” Fragile X syndrome and Retts is also common among the clinic’s patients.
Olmstead’s critics say that Olmstead has not proven there is a connection between vaccinations and autism. The gorilla in the room is the fact that these critics haven’t proven that there isn’t. The research denouncing the idea that mercury in vaccines could be causing a problem says things like, “Gee, we gave the kids vaccines and tested the blood, stool and urine for mercury and didn’t find any.” or, “Gee, the Danes use a lower level of mercury in their vaccines and they have as much autism as we do.” or, “Gee, we checked kids with autism and those without and the mercury levels were about the same.”
All of the medical journals sell ads to drug companies. Is there a better way to corrupt your findings than money?
Autism basically didn’t exist until the 1940s—it started after we started vaccinating children. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the vaccines are to blame; our environment has also gotten worse since the 1940s. But if there were real scientists in the medical community, they would compare the health of a population that does not get vaccinated to one that does get vaccinated. In the mean time, maybe it isn’t unreasonable to put the burden of proof on those who think that vaccines are a good thing, because they really haven’t proven that there is no connection between vaccines and autism.

How does one prove a negative? Dozens of studies have looked for an association between vaccines and autism, and found none.

None of the studies take the simple approach of comparing an unvaccinated population to a vaccinated population. They all just skirt the issue. The studies “look”, but they do things in a very roundabout way. Look at the studies–they really don’t prove much. Also, all of the medical journals sell ads to drug companies; how can that not affect what gets published? I honestly question how serious they are looking for a connection. I am not saying that there is a connection, but there could be and we have not honestly, adequately looked into it.

Medical science has known since the beginning of the 1900’s how to induce mental retardation and cancer in animals.
They know what causes these conditions and can control them. That is how they study “cures” for cancer. That used to be a secret.
In following years vaccines have increased in number and doses, and so has there has been an increase in Autism, cancer, asthma, and a whole slew of diseases that they know how to create in lab animals.
    Coincidence?
Or an active effort to create A Brave New World, where babies are fed the right mix of chemicals to create Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta people, or Smartest, smarter, barely average, and functional slaves.
Autism, from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 150 children.
    Still seem like a coincidence?

I would love it if I thought our government was that organized and capable. I don’t think you have to worry–they don’t seem to do very much very well. Also, the rich are the ones who tend to get all of the vaccines. I really think that the amount of vaccinations have more to do with drug company marketing, journals who sell ads to drug companies and doctors who are busy and just kind of go along with what the journals and the drug companies say. We really seem to be too lazy to apply any real science–and it seems taboo to even question vaccines. Also there are great economic forces that help to keep us from looking at vaccines from a critical and scientific angle. I also think that people who have questions about the dangers of vaccines need to be reasonable and measured in their questioning–not shrill or unreasonable. We do need to remember that Brave New World was a work of fiction

Brave New World was also written by one of the advocates for Eugenics.
Rockefeller stated that the world had no use for the poor.
Prince Phillip was caught saying that the poor should be eliminated entirely.
We already have ethnic cleansing going on by the millions. The biggest problem has been what to do with all the bodies? And if you kill too many off, there’s not enough left to dispose of the bodies.

I’m in the medical field and it doesn’t look good. They have already gotten a very good program going to eliminate a large number of people in a very short time.
The air is full of contaminates, the water also.
Vaccines are widespread and only recently questioned and refused. In poorer nations they give it away.
Our foods have been adulterated for nearly a century as a result our people are becoming sterile, our birth rate is in decline, weakened and chronically malnourished and mineral depleted.
And then there are the intentional population control programs actively and furiously sterilizing poor nations at an alarming pace. It’s not even choice in someplaces, they just quietly do it and lie to the men and women about the procedure they just got paid to have.
And half of all americans are currently on some form of prescription meds, and the goal is 100% by decades end.
You should read the trade magazines and journals. They do intend to make a vast profit from this plan at the same time.
Vaccines are just the tip of the ice berg.
It’s the boil the frog, start slow and raise the heat a little at a time.
End stage renal disease(ESRD) is a booming business, strokes, alzheimers, dementia, heart disease, cancer, lupus, diabetes, mental disorders and now man-made pandemics, are at all time record highs with no let up in sight.
If you look at as a fragmented puzzle, just individual parts, there appears to be no pattern, but there is.
You have to take each piece and put them together.
There is only one outcome, widespread death for large numbers, in a short time.
If people had not started on this get healthy, get natural kick hard and heavy, within 5 years very few of us would be left.
The stated goal is to reduce the world population by 5.5 billion and keep the population at 500,000.
The common thread is large numbers end up dead in a short time.
Of course, I could be wrong and it’s all just a coincidence and that nagging paranoia that grows from knowing that this is not science fiction.
    Do the research.

I think where we differ is in the belief that it is somehow orchestrated and organized. I have been in large organizations–they have meetings and memos just to order paper clips. The government has trouble delivering the mail–coordinating the four horseman might be a little much for them. I think we are just dealing with a lot of individual acts of greed and self-interest. Now there are a lot of us and we are noticing the consequences of our actions are farther reaching.
